Galloper wind farm, also known as GWFL (Galloper Wind Farm Limited) is a 336MW project in the southern North Sea. Owned by a joint equity partnership of project developers, it consists of four companies – UK Green Investment Bank, Siemens Financial Services (Siemens AG), Macquarie Capital Group, and innogy Renewables AG (innogy AG). Galloper is set to be a significant investment as it extends the existing Greater Gabbard project utilising proven Siemens’ technologies.

Located just 27km from the Suffolk coast at its nearest point, the 56 turbines, supplied by Siemens, will generate an annual energy equivalent to the consumption of 336,000 average UK households. With 38 turbines in the Northern Array and 18 in the Southern Array, the Siemens SWT-6.0-154 is designed to exploit a range of offshore wind conditions as they feature the world’s longest blades.

Galloper Wind Farm Limited

Galloper Wind Farm Limited is a consortium of owners developing and operating the project. Owners include RWE innogy, UK Green Investment Bank, Siemens Financial Services, and Macquarie Capital, each with a 25% share.


UK Green Investment Bank

UK Green Investment Bank acquired a 25% stake in Galloper Wind Farm upon the financial investment decision in October 2015.


Siemens Financial Services

Siemens Financial Services also acquired 25% upon the financial investment decision in October 2015.

Macquarie Capital Group Limited

Macquarie Group also acquired 25% upon the financial investment decision in October 2015.

It was later announced that they signed an agreement with Sumitomo corporation granting each with a 12.5% investment.

innogy Renewables UK (RWE AG) acquired the final 25% upon the financial investment decision in October 2015.


Galloper Wind Farm off to a Flying Start

There’s a great deal of offshore wind activity off the coast of the UK at present as the country races to meet its emissions reduction targets. The 56-turbine Galloper Wind Farm, an extension of the Greater Gabbard Wind Farm, will make a 336MW contribution to these goals, and progress is the order of the day as phase after phase slots neatly into place.

The £1.5 billion project 27 kilometres off the Suffolk coast will be ready for its projected 2018 commissioning date as a who’s who of offshore wind specialists tackling and fulfilling their portions of the project. InDepth Wind reports on current progress and future plans.

A Partnership of Equals

While it’s quite common to see one project stakeholder retaining a majority shareholding in wind farm projects, Galloper has chosen an equal partnership between its investors. innogy SE, the UK Green Investment Bank, Siemens Financial Services and Macquarie Capital partnering with the Sumitomo Corporation each have a 25 per cent stake in Galloper Wind Farm Limited which will develop and operate the wind farm. innogy SE is undertaking development and construction on behalf of the partners.

Following the finalisation of the partnership, Galloper Wind Farm Limited was named by Project Finance International as the European Power Deal of the Year in 2015.

Onshore Preparations

Initial onshore ground works were completed in 2014 before the 2015 financial close was announced. During the summer of 2016, the preparations were made at Sizewell beach and the first export cable was pulled ashore in August that year.

The onshore substation transformer was transported on a 20-axle trailer from Lowestoft Docks to the National Grid electricity substation at Leiston in October. From late summer this year, it will begin transmitting clean energy from Galloper as the first turbines come online.

Foundations in Place: New Record

GeoSea, a company in the DEME group and a veteran in turbine foundation engineering coordinated foundation construction. Installation began in December and was completed in March, two months ahead of schedule. The monopiles and transition pieces, manufactured by the Sif Group and Smulders, were installed using GeoSea’s jack-up vessel Innovation after having been dispatched from Rotterdam and Vlissingen.

Each foundation for the 6MW Siemens turbines installed at Galloper weighs 1,200 tonnes and is 85 metres long and 7.5 metres wide. GeoSea earned accolades for the speed and efficiency with which installation was completed.

“GeoSea has set records with its barn-storming performance on Galloper. To achieve a cycle-time of within a week to collect and install four complete foundations is remarkable, and certainly the fastest we’ve seen so far at innogy,” said Project Director Toby Edmonds. “To do this in winter makes it all the more impressive. The teams from Galloper and GeoSea have combined brilliantly to reach this major milestone, completing the foundation installation stage efficiently and safely in such good time.”


GeoSea’s efforts were supported by Colchester-based CWind. Its support services included bolting and corrosion prevention cathodic protection testing.

Kevin Loncke, GeoSea supervisor, said: “We were impressed by the range of skills offered by the CWind team and its track record in offshore wind. This, combined with its use of local technicians and expertise across our full scope of work, meant we were confident in entering into a partnership for this important project.”

Turbines and Substation Topside on the Way

Meanwhile, the turbines were being assembled for Siemens by technicians from the local 3Sun Group at a purpose-built facility at Peel Ports in Great Yarmouth. A 120m crane is being used to load the turbines onto the vessels, and at time of writing, Pacific Orca, a jack-up vessel from Swire Blue Ocean, had just set sail with the first turbines for installation.

Also during May came the news that Heerema had completed the substation topside, with transport to site aboard the Seaway Heavy Lifting vessel Oleg Strashnov to follow soon afterwards.

Unique Cable-Laying Method Pioneered

In March, Netherlands-based VBMS commenced the second export cables laying work after making headlines with the new and innovative cable-laying method which was used to install the first export cable for Galloper Wind Farm. It’s SeaSerpent buoyancy system allows the 45-kilometre-long export cable to be laid without the help of support vessels, divers or wet riggers.

VBMS Managing Director Arno van Poppel said: “We are delighted to have demonstrated this unique method successfully. It underlines our vision to liaise with both clients and partners in order to continuously improve existing methods, the safety of our operations and overall efficiency.”

VBMS is also responsible for the installation of the 56 inter-array cables which were manufactured by JDR at its Hartlepool facilities last year. NKT Cables supplied the export cables for Galloper Wind Farm.

Commissioning and Beyond

The Galloper Wind Farm will generate first power very soon, and the entire wind farm will be commissioned in March 2018, saving tens of thousands of tonnes in carbon emissions every year. The clean electricity to be generated is the equivalent of that used by more than 336,000 average homes.

Subsequently, the Operations and Maintenance teams for Galloper Wind Farm Limited will take over, basing their operations from a new facility at Harwich. This will provide employment for a steady staff of at least 90 people across the projected lifespan of the wind farm which is 23 years.

Towards 2018 and Full Commissioning without a Hitch

The wind energy industry fearlessly takes on projects of an almost inconceivable magnitude, but through cooperation, and with the help of an array of highly experienced and well-equipped supply chain partners, what seems nearly impossible becomes a reality.

Galloper Wind Farm has succeeded in building a project team that’s second to none, and the smooth progress of every detail of its construction so far is testimony to the wind energy industry’s ability to manage and execute mega-projects involving multiple contracts and specialised suppliers.
